  1. With HEB the only surprise to me is that they lost power, the HEBs I have gone to have giant generators that can keep the whole store running for about a week in the event of a hurricane.

Back in Houston we used to joke that the HEBs would be up, running, and resupplied after a hurricane before FEMA started loading trucks

  2. Worked for HEB back in the day. Honestly the nicest company. The were advocating for the Violence Against Women Act and pro immigration because they had store workers they cared about. If you’re abused and work for HEB, you can tell your store manager and they will help you — help with a new apartment and move you to another store. At least, that’s the policy that they told us.

  3. HEB is the best grocery chain in the US, since leaving Texas I’ve missed it a lot, and nothing compares! Safeway ain’t *that* bad, but it’s no Howard Edward Butts!! Edit: The Safeway where I live in Oregon is apparently a shining example of the chain, lol. Edit 2: I’ve never had so many upvotes, or comments. o_0 groceries is srs bsnss, yall.

  4. Who ever is the manager of that store should receive a raise and a promotion. I have never heard of H-E-B before this story and even I want to give them my business. If your store can eat the loss you’ve basically guaranteed customers for life while also getting a metric ton of cheap advertising.

  5. There’s a combination of practicality and decency you love to see. Truth is every store *should* do this in a natural disaster, because they aren’t allowed to keep and sell the vast majority of their food after this sort of situation anyway. If you lose power for a significant length of time, get flooded, etc, you have to dispose of your perishable food. It’s either going in a dumpster or home with a hungry family; the fact that any business chooses “dumpster” is appalling but unsurprising. Sadly it’s more surprising when they do the rational thing like HEB did here.

  6. Honestly, it makes sense. If they didn’t have a generator or their generator didn’t work, they were going to have to throw out all their perishable food anyway, and even a lot of the non-perishable should it freeze. At the end of the day it’s an insurance writeoff one way or another. The only difference is whether people actually benefit from those items.

  7. In case anyone was wondering, emergencies aside, you can generally order HEB products direct from their website and have them shipped to you.

Not quite the same experience as walking by the bakery and smelling the hot butter tortillas being made but you know.

  8. Meanwhile Fred Meyer has cops guarding their dumpster because food can’t be free.

(There are laws that protect businesses from lawsuits against spoiled food, assuming they donate it. No one gets sued if someone hurts themselves dumpster diving or gets sick from eating garbage. I am tired of this “reasonable explanation” defending the store or the police. Quit your bullshit.)

  9. I bet a bunch of those folks will return the courtesy by coming in to make an honest effort to settle accounts when things are back to normal.

Folks in Austin can be pretty cool, notwithstanding that nearby is Leander, the site of the famous Outcry case.

  10. This isn’t surprising considering the massive amount of community outreach that HEB is known for. They have monthly donation quotas of groceries to local food banks in the communities they server as well as surrounding areas. 40 to 50 million meals a year in Texas and Mexico. I travel for a living and have worked in 48 states and never found a better grocery store. They are on a whole other level.
