Snapped an illegal pic of the Sistine Chapel
That looks like such a pain in the ass to paint.
Damn it’s so beautiful, imagine what the other fifteen look like.
Its a good thing the pope doesnt have a reddit account or they woukd be after you!
I did when I was a kid. my camera film never got developed in time and I lost all my photos
I did that too years ago with a DSLR 🤫
Do they still yell Silencio in a deep booming voice every 5 min?
SILENCIO!!!
Excuse the ignorance but why is it ilegal to take pictures?
“THE SISTINE CHAPEL IS A HOLY PLACE, PLEASE BE QUIET”
Says the man with the loudspeaker
“THE SISTINE CHAPEL IS A HOLY PLACE, NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED”
Says the man with the body camera.
There’s an interesting story my professor in uni told us about during the painting of the Sistine Chapel. While michelangelo was painting, the pope at the time would try to micromanage what images should go up on the ceiling. The pope threatened that he would replace everything with stars if there was too much nudity. This particular threat angered the master artist who was working hard on the painting. Michael kicked a bucket of paint down from the platforms near the ceiling, almost striking the pope who was looking up at Michael from the ground. A normal person would have probably been sentenced to death for attacking the pope, but because michelangelo was michelangelo, he didn’t receive any punishment and the pope let him continue painting the way he initially intended.
Not sure how much of that story is true, but I thought it was interesting to hear.
My wife and I had a brief moment alone in the Chapel. We decided to go directly to the Chapel when the Vatican opened, along with many others. We turned a corner just as they were opening a second entrance in. Nobody else seemed to notice and we beat the crowd.
We had about 1.5 minutes to ourselves.

You and 200 other people.

Fun fact: The reason why it’s not allowed is because back in the 80s, Italy needed to do a restoration and it was really expensive.
The highest bidder was a Japanese company and with the bid they won exclusive rights for something like 3-5 years to take pictures and video. In school we got to see the high res images and bts stuff.
Now they don’t have the rights but they still have the ban but arent strict with it so the flashes dont ruin the work again.
Edit: Yes Vatican city is its own city-state but from what I recall in articles and the Sistine Chapel restoration book/article we read, Italy was involved. Either way a Japanese tv station still bought the rights back then.
I took my own sneaky shot too before disappearing into the crowd. The perfect crime.
I was jus there yesterday! Pretty amazing.
Silencio.. no photo, no video
Was there in June. Soo many people with no crowd control. While it was beautiful, getting out of it was insane. Everyone funneling thru a small door.
You and everyone else.
Bad idea. If they catch you, you could be looking at doing Sistine to life
“No Talking, no pictures “.

When I was there recently there were quite a few tourists taking pics, most of which got away with it.
There are actually pictures of it that existed already
My god! A picture of the Sistine Chapel! Finally one has been uploaded onto the internet!
Why is it illegal to take pics of it?
I resisted the urge to take picture when I visited because they asked us not to, it’s their building, and I don’t feel entitled to a picture.
The art subreddits are filled with naked women’s bodies. Seeing these balls makes me feel sane again. Thank you.
Back in 2007, pre-camera phones, i was holding a canon ixus mostly obscured by my long sleeves, hands positioned normally as you would when walking, but the camera aimed up to the ceiling, videoing whatever I can and intended to take screen grabs later. The place was quite crowded too so I tried to blend in. But in under a minute a firm hand was on my shoulder, it was a security guy telling me to quit it. I was like wtf, this must be a done thing, they knew what to look for
