  1. I came home two days ago with concha in absolutely the worst condition I’ve ever seen her in, not that’s in bad condition always. Her breathing was fast, erratic, and Ill sounding. Huffing, wheezing, deep breaths now and then. I thought she was going to die. It was just so out of left field I didn’t know what to do.

I was crying and holding her. It hurt so much to see her struggling. I kept her close to me for a while.

Maybe she refuses to drink her water and now she’s dehydrated? But she’s never done that? So I take one of her treats and dip it in water and put it to her mouth so she licks it. But I don’t think that’s what was wrong with her.

Maybe she somehow overheated? So I get an ice pack, put it on me and covered it with a thin blanket and put her on top, she was on it for a bit but shifted away from it. So I guess that wasn’t it.

She absolutely scared me with the way she was, I genuinely considered emergency euthanasia. And even when I did call, there was no time or space to get her in. So I had to wait and see, crying and scrambling for solutions.

Two days later and my darling concha is thankfully still with me. She’s definitely not in the same condition she was in a few days ago. She still makes Ill noises when breathing.

Yes I’ve made vet appointments on the 3rd of July and I’m still waiting to hear from them.

Is there anything I can do to help heal or lessen her pain? I read that honey and water could help, but I haven’t done it yet.

I’m going to clean out her cage again tomorrow too

Please keep concha in your hearts 🙏

  2. Hello, I am unsure of the current stress level, medical condition of concha so this is just general advice.

Would you be able to clear out the cage and clean it while concha is resting in a separate carrier?

It would be best to remove all wooden accessories as they trap bacteria easily. Please sanitise them but do not place them back in the cage with concha yet. For now, please provide cover for her with the porcelain hideouts that she has.

If you have access to dust free paper bedding, please change out all of the bedding after sanitising the cage. Otherwise, hand shredded kitchen towel would be a temporary alternative. As this is an emergency, the bedding should not be deep as you have to be able to see her easily at any point time to check on her.

Regarding the sand, I am unsure but would be best to have it remove in case it is too dusty. However, do take note to clean up any pee and poop so that the cage remains clean without the sand.

Please also monitor her condition throughout these as I’m worried that the stress level might cause her to breathe harder.

  3. So sorry to hear this, Concha is a cutie. For stuff to tide her over until you get to a vet…I have heard of thyme tea being a home remedy for infections, but that’s only if she’ll drink it. Oregano is also a natural antibacterial.

  4. My little guy Harry passed away because of a respiratory issue.
I would advise you to go immediately to an exotic veterinarian if you have one or just general veterinarian. Out veterinarian stated that respiratory issues can worsen within a short time. Meaning if you delay going to vet.
Good luck and your little one feels better.
