Hoping to travel to Chile for a year in the near future, and was wondering if all the positive things people always say about Chile are still true to this day.

For example I have always read and been told that Chile is very low crime (lowest in South America) and that they also have the best health care system in South America. I have also heard that it is just generally a great place to visit.

Para aquellos que se lo preguntan, soy canadiense! 🙂

  1. We are in fact the best country of Chile

    That aside:

    * Crime wise: We are probably below Argentina and Uruguay in terms of safety. Crime has always been something rather problematic but on the past few years crime has been unfortunately on the rise. On the flip side, we are still nowhere near Colombia, Venezuela, or Mexico and it’s totally bearable. If you want to come and visit Chile, just keep an eye on your surroundings, don’t show your stuff, and don’t walk alone after dark except on well-lit and crowded places (and seriously don’t go out past 10-11 PM). As a tourist you should also keep an eye on scammers, especially taxis. Someone not too long ago got scammed and came here asking for recs; if you need to pay with cash, keep your eye on the money at ALL times! Otherwise, prefer credit cards!
    * Health wise: It is pretty good, I can’t say much about it. We got a solid mixed private-public system; although the public system has several issues (long wait lists for people who need it), we are nowhere near USA prices in terms of healthcare.
    * Tourism: We have a lot to offer, and our culture is very much unlike the usual latino vibe. Do expect a gloomier vibe than other latinos, but given you’re Canadian this should also make it a lot easier for you to adapt.

    Does this help somehow?

  2. I dont think that chile is a dangerous country at all (obviously compared to other south american countries) but you have to be careful like in any other countries

-Do not go with the taxists that are outside the airport (they are likely to charge a very inflated price for your trip), uber is the key (In fact we use more the public transport like metro and buses or uber than taxis)
    – Santiago, Concepcion and Valparaiso are the 3 largest cities so in all of these 3 cities you should be aware of muggers, and have the general measures of safety that you have in every big city
-if you stay in santiago try to avoid dangerous “Comunas” they are usually in the south side of the city, stick to the northeast part of the city (Las condes, Vitacura, Ñuñoa etc), Also Estacion central and santiago centro are places you should be very aware especially estacion central because of the infestation of inmigrant muggers
-As other comment said in chile we dont have that latino vibe you could expect from other south americans country, we are a more of a sober society we are more alike to argentina and uruguay than to colombia or brazil (that doesn’t mean we dont have fun, we are just more reserved and in a adecuate context that changes completely)
-If you want to explore the south the danger is almost null (in small cities and towns) in the other hand the cities in the north tend to be more dangerous because (again) of the inmigrants that get there

With all that said i wish a nice trip to you and i hope you can enjoy chile

  3. Wait are you RYAN REYNOLDS? but yeah if you dont visit Santiago in the nights, or the center with no precaution, Valparaiso too. you will be just fine. Remember all the tap water is healthy and have no risk in common for you, but you can always buy bottled water to be sure. Avoid strange foods your stomach maybe is not ready enough to all the sea food that we have here. The natural parks are the most beauty in the beauty of this world. Beware of the cold ocean waters if you go visit some beaches.

  4. Mosts risks are attached to Santiago, Valparaíso and other big metropoli. In Santiago, stay in Providencia, Las Condes or other high class district unless you know what your doing. You can still pretty much have no problem in other comunas like San Miguel, La Cisterna or Ñuñoa, but some guys are so fucking clueless like “I’ll stay out with my baggage at 5AM in a residential-less neighborhood, what could possibly go wrong” or “I’ll go grab some grub at 9-10PM at some definitely-not-safe neighborhood, take out my camera, and take some photos with said camera 10 mts in front of some hideous thugs” that’s it is better for them to pay the premium price.

  5. Chile Is still the “best country of latam” ( with uruguay , you can make an argument for argentina and costa Rica,  and if you live only in upper rich neighborhoods other countries can be even better like brazil)

But we have a set back from 10 years ago, we are worse,  but still “the less worst” of latin america
