Earlier this year, members of the News Enlightenment Initiative (NEI-Germany) and Project Censored partnered to recruit an international jury of news professionals and media scholars to identify and highlight “News Neglect, Censorship, and Agenda Cutting Around the Globe.” In June, we unveiled our top selected international stories at the Deutsche Welle (DW) Global Media Forum. The event, titled “Overcoming Divisions,” took place in Bonn, Germany. Daniel Müller of NEI was one of the participants there, he joined the program along with Andy Lee Roth, associate director of Project Censored. We discussed the inaugural story list of the top underreported stories that features news topics that transcend national boundaries in terms of their ongoing censorship. Müller and Roth also note the importance of independent journalism in the public interest to counter such underreporting of these significant stories. Then, we wrap up the program with an update on the Julian Assange case with Kevin Gosztola, author of Guilty of Journalism. Kevin gives us the latest news about what looks to be an impending extradition and reminds us how grim this is for both Assange and the state of the free press around the world.
Notes:
Daniel Müller is a member of the NEI, and a veteran instructor of journalism at institutions in Germany. He also holds advanced degrees in Eastern European History. Andy Lee Roth is Associate Director of Project Censored, co-editor of the Project’s annual media-review volume, and co-coordinator of the Project’s Campus Affiliates Program. He has published widely on media issues.
Kevin Gosztola is the managing editor of Shadowproof. He has covered the Julian Assange legal proceedings in the UK from its beginning, as well as many other major press-freedom and whistleblower cases. Gosztola also writes at thedissenter. His new book on the Assange case, Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange is now available from The Censored Press/Seven Stories Press.
