My girlfriend is Chilean, and I’m invited over for tea to her house (with her parents being there). This is my first time coming over to her place, so I’m wondering what is considered customary when invited over?
Where I am from it is considered polite to bring something when invited for tea/dinner (like a cake for example), but not necessarily impolite if you come empty handed. Is it somewhat similar in Chile? Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts, thanks all.
It’s not impolite, but if you wanna buy something its always well recieved, and probably her family will take it as a good sign 💕
it depends on the family but i belive in the most homes its seen as an act of respect and good faith, my grandpa always said: “siempre llega tocando la puerta con los pies”.
A cake or something sweet is good enought dont put too much thought about it, its about the gesture and the intention not the price or the “exclusivity” its not about status its about respect and gratitude to hte invitation, but dont get cheap either it could be bad recieved if you go with idk an 3 days old open cake or something like that, it could be seen as an disrespectful act
edit: if youre from the us, chileans up there usually dont have “strict cultural norms”, chileans, argentinians, uruguayans and i think brazilians, tend to adapt quickly to local customs in the country theyre living in, specially if theyre second generation migrants, dont get over complicated with this kind of stuff, just do what feels correct, use common sense, good luck man
A cake, a sweet, or anything that goes well with a tea or coffee so they can put it in the table is the way to go.

Yes, always bring something! Even if someone tells you you don’t need to bring anything, it will be a nice gesture (and still lowkey expected in some cases).
You don’t need anything expensive, a cake is a good idea but maybe something that does not look too fancy, so it does not look as you wanna brag.
I always do bring something when visiting others, even close friends.
