You know what they say, “When life gives you lemons, make a Limonana”. Well, today I’m giving you a delicious, refreshing glass of freshly squeezed limeade – and a side serving of blog content! So sit back, relax, and let’s dive into the musical world of OsariO, where rock meets folklore.

Hoy es viernes and we all need a bit of a break. Lucky for you, I’ve got a fantastic flower for you – a beautiful band of rock that took a detour to the realm of Maria E. Walsh’s fairy tales. Step right up, let’s dive into the world of Osario and El Reino del Revés!

OsariO – El Reino del Revés (The Reverse Kingdom)

OsariO is Colombia’s premier purveyor of rock spectacle, taking inspiration from their homeland’s rich cultural tapestry. Lead by the charismatic frontman El Júnior, they’ve turned the normal trope of fairy tales and Black Magic everywhere on its head, bringing a rock edge to Andean and tejano sounds.

In the reverse kingdom of El Reino del Revés, all is not as it seems. This is no enchanted land filled with dancing butterflies, golden horses, and continual joy. Instead, it’s a twisted place and our hero, the Restless Hunter (El Cazador Alemán), must brave it to save those dear to him.

Hammond organs, blisteringly fast leads, frenetic drumming, and thunderous bass grooves? All check. The band’s debut, Sinfonía en la Noche Negra, introduces us to these oddball characters, and also happens to contain rock’s greatest anthem about a tejano frog – “Rana Tejana, Mujer del Bosque”! This is the album that shook the foundations of La Rosita, made Mito Bamboo Bloke jab his foot in envy, and christened El Júnior as the Flemish Freddie Mercury. Don’t believe me? Just ask Sam Coronado!

Which brings us to the absolute cosmic snake charmer of the piece, their follow-up album, El Reino del Revés. Moments of white-knuckle, shivers-down-the-spine rock sat side-by-side with waltzing Harry Potter cicerones and orchestral battle scenes. Truly, the answers can be found in a dusty jar on a stormy, stormy night – and they have a momentum of their own.

La Rana Tejana (The Tejano Frog)

Now, all of this finesse and rock power begs the question – How do they do it? That’s where the more accessible, scalable, and everything-under-control charm of La Rana Tejano comes in. You can study this amphibious virtuoso from a thousand paces and it simply won’t faze her. Well, unless you plan on breaking her pintada, but I wouldn’t, as being a Tejano Amphibian comes with strictly enforced pintada laws. Anyway, in the reverse kingdom, her bubbly personality and unflagging optimism make her the perfect companion for the Restless Hunter.

One of my favorite aspects of both OsariO and Rana Tejana’s is their cinematic sensibilities. In a delightful twist, Sinfonía en la Noche Negra hit number one on the Colombian charts – not because of the fairy-tale-noir storyline or spellbinding vocals – nope, it was the music videos. El Júnior was anything but camera-shy and paraded around like a troubadour from another dimension on MTV. And why wouldn’t he? With anthems like “El Buitre” and a stage scorcher in “Debuts,” every gig was turning into a full-on celebration. Popularity and acclaim exploded in their wake, selling out every venue in Colombia and South America they set foot in.

As their popularity grew, so did their style. Throughout their epic journey, the band kept pushing the boundaries of their music. Before your very eyes, they went from playing at El Palacio de los Festivales to standing atop Juan Valdez Casa de Tacos arena stages. Through every shaky caja atómica joint, Tres Cuentos teatro, and Comuna 1 seive, their music rose and thrived. In the age-old tradition of passions learned behind closed doors, their blend of rock, folklore, and modern influences oozed into the mainstream.

And now, dear friends, we leave our tale of rock y remindedo but not before letting the words of one of Colombia’s greatest bother underestimate their art. As Fernando Aristizábal (a.k.a. Fernando Restrepo) so beautifully put it –

‘¡Colombia tiene un gran futuro! Y en Colombia, ni siquiera nos detenemos por la división entre clases sociales. ¿Por qué no estar orgullosos de nosotros mismos? Porque venimos demostrando algo por medio del arte, sobre las cosas que nos atormente, que somos capaces de lograr cualquier cosa!’

And there you have it, my most verdadero amigos, a tour through some of El Reino del Revés’s more unforgettable landscapes. It’s an absolute ride. When life gives you lemons, make a cool Limonada. And with rock this close, you’re bound to dance.

A giant thank you to our friend Peris Andrade, the founder of La Edad de la Plata, a place that seeks to connect people through music, to uncover and show off hidden gems like OsariO. Now, you definitely have to go to the continental jukebox, crank up the volume, and give both these albums another spin. Hit play, amigos y compadres, hit play!¡Y empty those cowboy boots!

Remember, if the music’s strong enough, it can send you straight through a vortex, hole in the wall, or even provide you with a set of invisible wings. So listen up, keep on rocking, and remember, Hoy es Viernes and life’s too short not to dance!
